How an Unused Space Under the Stairs Turned into a Gorgeous Custom Wine Cellar

When you hear about wine cellars, the first thing that comes to your mind is a large room filled with many bottles. Nowadays, most wine enthusiasts make use of a small space in their home and convert it into a functional wine room.

In many parts of the United States, including Florida, building wine cellars under the stairs is in demand. In Tampa, Wine Cellar Specialists worked on a project where they had to deal with the irregular shape and limited space underneath the staircase.

Their team’s creativity and extensive experience in the construction industry was a huge bonus in providing an innovative wine storage solution to their client.

One of the questions you must ask yourself before starting your wine cellar project is whether you want a classic or contemporary design.

Once you have decided, you can talk to your chosen builder about it so they can create a design that will suit your requirements. The wine rack system is the most important component that affects the overall visual appeal of your cellar.

In this project, the room was originally a storage area with double doors, which were designed to match the owner’s iron gate.

Choosing the right material for the racking will satisfy your aesthetic needs. Metal is used for modern wine rooms, while wood is for classic wine cellars.

Wood is a widely used material in wine rack construction because of its aesthetic and functional benefits. Its warmth and earthy look can provide a relaxing ambiance to your wine cellar. There are types of wood that are naturally beautiful even when unstained, while some look more attractive when finished with a stain or lacquer.

On this project, Wine Cellar Specialists used Knotty Alder for the wooden wine racks. For a lustrous finish, they applied the entire racking with lacquer.

Characteristics of Knotty Alder

Knotty Alder is a type of hardwood with medium density. With its light brown to reddish hues, it can blend well with any home décor.

It exhibits various sizes of open and large split knots. These knots have different colors and shapes that make Knotty Alder wine racks more attractive when stained. Additionally, this wood variety is also known for its versatility, durability, and high resistance to infestations.

First Elevation

The first wall as you enter the room is labeled Elevation A in the 3D drawing. It is the wall where the door was installed. The wine rack is only 3.7 feet in height and includes a 1 ½-inch toe kick base.

It has a tabletop where the owner can decant and serve wine. It adds an eco-friendly feature to this traditional wine cellar in Tampa because it was manufactured from the head of reclaimed wine barrels. You can see the distinctive markings that came from the type of wine that was originally stored in the barrel.

Below the tabletop are single openings for standard bottles. The bottom section is a solid X-bin, which is ideal for bulk storage. The space above this wine rack was intended for the wall-mounted wine cooling unit hidden in a wooden grill box.

The curved wall is the left wall when you enter the wine cellar. Wine Cellar Specialists installed true-radius wooden wine racks. With a total height of 9.8 feet including the toe kick base, this wine rack consists of individual bottle openings at the top and lower sections.

A display row runs in the middle of the racking. It stores the bottles at an angle to prevent the cork from drying out. Wine Cellar Specialists installed an LED red ribbon lighting fixture above the display row. LED lights are highly recommended for use in climate-controlled wine rooms because of their low heat emission.

There is a two-column wine rack at the left-most side of the curved wall to accommodate 16 champagne bottles and 23 split-size bottles.

Third Elevation

Just like Elevation 1, Elevation 3 consists of a short wine rack with a height of 3.25 feet. Two 750ml bottles or one champagne bottle can be stored horizontally in the topmost section. Wood cases can be placed in the three succeeding solid bins below the horizontal display area.

For the wine cellar door, the client wanted to complement the wrought iron gate in the client’s home.

What Wine Cellar Specialists did was install a double door constructed from the same material. It was framed in Knotty Alder and equipped with a custom base molding.

To add character to the door, they finished it with an Early American stain. The client chose the Sonoma 2-piece handle set and lock in oil-rubbed bronze.

Whatever type of wine cellar you have, a wine-cooling unit with superior performance must be installed. It will help achieve the optimum conditions needed to preserve wine for many years to come.

Do not purchase cooling equipment if you are not sure what type, size, brand, and capacity to choose. Ask your builder what type of cooling equipment is needed to ensure that the perfect environment is created in your wine room.

On this project, Wine Cellar Specialists used the Wall Mount 3600 ductless split wine cooling unit from US Cellar Systems. The evaporator is on the wall above the tabletop, while the condenser was placed in the garage on a high shelf. You will find the light switches and digital controller just outside the door.
